These flax linen gained popularity among the different countries, mainly due to its pure white color and soft texture, which made the sleeping experience much more comfortable. Soon other bedding materials such as pillow covers began to manufacture using the same material.
In spite of its viability, cultivating, harvesting and then weaving into linen was tiring task and thus, 19th century as a revolutionary period for the evolution of bed sheets. The invention of the cotton gin, a machine that easily segregates the cotton seeds from cotton was the key factor.
With the help of this machine, the separation and process of cotton became very easy (which was a gigantic task), and thus, the cotton bed sheet was born. This was only the beginning of a very long journey of bed sheet among people. The looms became mechanized and the production of cotton became more conventional as compared to flax.
Mass production made them more budget friendly and thus, more and more people began to use it. It became the new definition of bed sheet.
